Old School Runescape pulled offline due to epic gold bug

Old School RuneScape players were in for a treat last night, as billions of gold spawned where usually just a few thousand supplies should sit.The most cash you can carry in RuneScape is 2.147 billion – ‘max cash’. Many players hit that once-mythical status this morning after a bug caused gold supplies to multiply many times in worth.

Developers Jagex were quick to see to the problem – by pulling the entire game for twenty minutes. After a quick bug-squashing mission, the game was back online with all the extra gold removed, along with progress made by every player since the bug started. Crafty players who had swapped their easy-gold for longer subscriptions have had their extra subscriptions revoked – and will ‘be temporarily removed from the game’, according to developers Jagex.

One Jagex developer, who goes by the mod handle Mod Ash, discussed the issue on Twitter, confirming that “max cash stacks” were “being generated on death if you had certain items.” Mod Ash also said the OSRS team is working on a rollback—that is, reverting the game to its state before the bugged update, effectively undoing all the duplicated gold as well as everything else that happened in the 20 chaotic minutes following the update. If you want to know where is the safest place to buy Old School RuneScape Money, I think z2u.com is your best choice, after all, the site has been officially certified,so it’s very safe.

Ironically, the update that caused the bug, a “game integrity” update of all things, was a change to the Thieving skill intended to combat bots and gold farmers. As YouTuber OakDice pointed out, some wires got crossed and this update caused instanced events that store or generate gold to yield billions.

The problem is Old School Bonds. The basic version of OSRS is free-to-play, but most of its content – including many skills and quests – is members-only. You can pay for membership with real money, but also by redeeming Old School Bonds, which can be bought with in-gamecurrency.Bond prices fluctuate, but generally they cost a hell of a lot… unless, of course, there’s a bug that gives you practically unlimited gold. ThisReddit commentsuggests that players did indeed catch on and “redeemed bonds with the money” they got from the bug, concluding, emotively: “OMEGALUL.” Omegalul, indeed.
